First MSc in Timber Industry Management
31-07-2007
Michael Donaldson, Product Manager for Fife based Donaldson Timber Engineering’s (DTE) Structural Insulated Roofing System (SIRS), has become the first person in the UK to graduate with an MSc in Timber Industry Management
This post–graduate course, which was launched by Napier University’s Centre for Timber Engineering in 2006, is designed to meet the developmental needs of individuals building a career within the timber industry. The course covers topics ranging from the properties of timber and its application within contemporary, sustainable design, to a range of research, management and commercial issues.
Michael Donaldson commented:
“I’m the sixth generation of my family to work in the timber trade, so I’m lucky to have a great background of experience to draw on from within the company. This MSc has added to that by giving me a really broad understanding of contemporary issues within the timber industry, from technical applications of timber in construction to commercial and project management skills. I’m delighted to be the first to complete the course.”
Mr Peter Wilson, Director of Business Development, Centre for Timber Engineering also commented:
“Greater recognition of timber’s value as a genuinely renewable resource has led to increased use of the material in all aspects of construction. The CTE’s MSc in Timber Industry Management is a highly effective route for experienced people in the forestry and timber sectors to further develop their careers and exploit the new opportunities in construction”.
Concluding the interview, Mr George Watson, Managing Director of Donaldson Timber Engineering Northern, said:
“We warmly congratulate Michael on his success. The skills and understanding he has gained though the MSc process should prove invaluable to DTE and to our clients, as we take our engineered timber products forward in today’s highly competitive market.”
